Cities are constantly evolving and facing challenges such as pollution, population growth and the need for more accessible and functional spaces. In this context, street furniture plays a key role in the construction of sustainable cities, contributing both to the quality of life of citizens and to looking after the environment.
What is it?
Urban furniture encompasses all the elements installed in public spaces to improve the comfort, safety and functionality of a city. It includes benches, litter bins, lighting, bollards and bicycle racks, among others.
Benefits for sustainability
1. Promotion of sustainable mobility
Well-designed street furniture boosts sustainable modes of transport. The installation of shared bicycle parking facilities promotes non-motorised mobility, reducing pollution and easing traffic congestion.
2. Reduction of the environmental impact
The use of recycled materials and low-environmental-impact steel in the manufacture of street furniture reduces the ecological footprint of cities. In addition, elements such as recycling bins facilitate the correct disposal of waste.
3. Better use of public spaces
Street furniture makes it possible to create green areas, rest zones and recreational spaces that encourage civic interaction and the physical and mental well-being of the population.
4. Energy efficiency
LED and solar lighting helps to reduce energy consumption and the emission of polluting gases, contributing to urban sustainability.
5. Durability and reduced maintenance
Sustainable street furniture is designed to withstand adverse weather conditions and minimise maintenance costs, ensuring its long-term functionality.
Not only does it improve the aesthetics of cities, but it also plays a fundamental role in the sustainability and wellbeing of their inhabitants. Investing in innovative and ecological solutions is key to building more habitable, safe and environmentally responsible cities.
